IDENTIFYING PRIMARY MOTIVATIONS

There are several ways you can approach finding out the primary motivation of your clients (what level of psychological development your clients have reached). The first approach is to consider their age. For most people, this will give you a reasonably accurate reading.

Age exercise

This is not so much an exercise as simple method you can use for identifying your client’s most likely stage of psychological development. If your client is somewhere between the ages of 30 and 60, they are most likely to be in either the differentiating, individuating, self-actualising or integrating stages (see Figure 9.1).
